5 Unique Moving Tips for Making the Big Day Easier

While moving to a new home can be exciting and fun, it can also be stressful and tiring. To help you plan the smoothest and easiest move possible, we’ve assembled the following unique tips, tricks and moving hacks.

1. Leave the Plants Behind

Plants don’t do well in a move. It stresses them out, besides, if you are crossing state lines in your move, transporting plants may be restricted or prohibited. Instead of bringing your houseplants, consider gifting them to friends, family, or co-workers. Someone you know may be thrilled to receive a beautiful houseplant as a gift.

2. Bring Clean Sheets

No matter how well you prepare, you are sure to be exhausted on moving day. Think of the things you’ll want on the first night in your new place, like toiletries, snacks, and bedding. Put a set of clean sheets in the top drawer of each dresser so it’s easy to make up the beds on the night of the move.

3. Keep Track of Hardware Bits

If you take apart furniture or electronics for the move, put the screws and hardware bits in plastic sandwich bags. Use packing tape to attach the sandwich bags to the under or back side of the disassembled item. This way, you’ll be able to find everything you need to put your items back together after the move.

4. Use Color Coding

Buy packing tape in several different colors. Designate different colors to represent rooms. For example, red for the kitchen, green for the bathroom, and blue for the master bedroom. Tape your boxes with the designated colors. When you arrive at the new place, you can sort the boxes by color. A color-coding system will make it easy to unpack each room in the new place.

5. Save Boxes by Using Suitcases and Laundry Baskets for Packing

Of course, you will need lots of boxes for your move. However, you can minimize the number of boxes you need by using the containers you already own. For example, you can use empty pots and pans to pack your spices and pantry items, or laundry baskets and suitcases for clothes.
